The development of evaluation methods for soil functions of urban and industrial soils is one of the main goals within the project. As there are lots of methods to assess naturals soils there is a lack of valid methods for urban soils. This lack is unacceptable in the course of the legal situation and to reduce urban sprawl and land consumption. It is necessary to prove soil qualities for variations of locations for different forms of land use. The experience in the use and development of assessment methods for natural soils shows that a close coordination with the demands of urban and land use planners is very important. Otherwise there could be misunderstandings and consequently problems with the implementation. Therefore the development of the new methods will be lean on demands of the municipality’s land-use-management.
Consideration of urban soil functions in land use planning is important for getting a higher quality in the cities of now and tomorrow. Comfortable, healthy and social balanced cities are essential keys for reducing urban sprawl and to get a smart growth. The results should be integrated in the method system “MeMaS” of the LBEG (State Authority for Mining, Energy and Geology) to make it available for other cities nationwide.
